The vineyard is located at the top of the Ermitage hill, near the chapelle, in a place called Ermite. It is made up of old vines more than 80 years old on a very granitic soil pobre.Los Hermitage wines have a rich historical past: they were already appreciated in Roman times, when they were enjoyed together with the wines of Côte Rotie, under the name of "Vienne wines". They were later labeled as "Wines of the hillside of St. Christopher", due to a chapel in the area named after the saint. They were also known as "Wines of Tournon".The name Hermitage probably first appeared in the 17th century in memory of Herny Gaspard, a knight of Sterimberg; who having returned from the Crusades (in the 13th century) and tired of waging war, lived as a "hermite" on a hill that had been granted to him by Anne of Castile, Queen of Spain. There he planted a vineyarda.Alejandro Dumas, as well as Tsar Nicholas II are among the many connoisseurs and lovers of this wine.
